In addition to Bill's comment, the money back guarantee is moot. The company shouldn't be charging you an upfront fee period, as it is against the law do so in California as of October 2009.

Call a HUD approved housing counseling agency. These non-profit groups will do everything a for profit company will do and they have credibility with the mortgage lenders. The good news is that their services are free. Still, there's no guaranty that this will result in a modification, but you won't be burned in the process. The toll free number is: 888-995-4673.
Good luck.

I have been recently looking into Loan Modification and found the similar information about free help from HUD but have also been looking into R A Law Group out of Glendale, CA. However they are also requesting an upfront fee ($3000). This particular company has links to information on their standing with the California Bar Association and some links to reviews in what appears to be a blog with nothing but 5 star perfect ratings. This in itself seems to cause some doubt. Perfection within the world wide internet community seems nigh impossible. When I get more information collected I will report back.
